Fermentation Scientist
About Again
Again makes carbon negative chemicals for a cleaner future. We are the first carbon negative chemical manufacturer that can scale to meet global demand. The best thing about it: we use carbon dioxide as a feedstock. We have raised over $100m to date from top venture capital investors as well as in grant funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 programme. We are a growing team of experienced scientists, engineers and entrepreneurs from the DTU, Stanford, MIT (and more) who are passionate about revolutionizing the chemical industry. Join us in the fight against climate change.
What you’ll do
We are seeking a highly motivated Fermentation Scientist to join our Fermentation team. The successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating and designing fermentation processes that enable the production of small molecules from novel carbon sources. This role will encompass a wide array of different topics in microbial physiology, bioreactor operations, and process optimization, with opportunities to contribute to both strain characterization and scalable process development. Your work will be pivotal in making our process the go-to technology for green chemical manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Design, execute, and analyze fermentation experiments at the bench scale (1–10 L bioreactors) using diverse microbial hosts and feedstocks.
- Develop and optimize fermentation processes for prokaryotic systems; contribute to development of eukaryotic systems as appropriate.
- Investigate and apply anaerobic fermentation strategies where beneficial to product formation.
- Collaborate with strain engineering, downstream processing, and analytical teams to integrate fermentation with end-to-end process development.
- Characterize fermentation performance, including growth kinetics, metabolic profiles, and product yields, interpreting and presenting results to team and project partners
- Translate laboratory-scale findings into process knowledge to support pilot- and manufacturing-scale fermentation.
- Document experimental methods and results in technical reports, SOPs, and process development summaries.
- Contribute technical expertise to cross-functional teams and project milestones.
- Mentor and train junior staff in fermentation techniques and laboratory best practices.
About You
- Ph.D. in Microbiology, Biochemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or related field with 0–2 years of industry experience, OR M.S. with 3–5 years of relevant industry experience or equivalent
- Demonstrated expertise in small molecule production via microbial fermentation.
- Hands-on experience with prokaryotic cell culture and fermentation process development.
- Preferred: experience with eukaryotic microbial hosts (e.g., yeast, filamentous fungi).
- Preferred: experience with anaerobic strains and anaerobic fermentation processes.
- Proficiency in bench-scale bioreactor operation, monitoring, and troubleshooting.
- Familiarity with process monitoring and analytical tools (e.g., off-gas analysis, online sensors, HPLC, GC-MS, LC-MS).
- Experience in downstream purification of microbial products is a plus.
- Strong problem-solving and data interpretation skills, with the ability to independently design and troubleshoot experiments.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including preparation of technical reports and presentations.
- Ability to work collaboratively in a dynamic, multidisciplinary, and multicultural team environment.
What we promise you?
- You get to work with a group of passionate scientists, working on challenging and meaningful projects
- This will be the journey of a lifetime – we are serious about our mission to reduce over 1 gigaton of CO₂ and you can play a pivotal role in making that happen
- An inclusive, empowering and engaging work environment
- We understand that relocating can be a hassle, so if you don't live in Denmark, we will help out to give you a smooth transition
